A while ago you could read here that Rowan Atkinson put his McLaren F1 up for sale. It is chassis 61 from 64 road cars and was produced in 1997. Although the car suffered two accidents, with the last one costing the insurance company £910,000 in repairs, the ‘Rowan Atkinson McLaren F1’ was destined to be a record breaker. Rowan Atkinson was the first owner – he bought the car in 1997 for £640,000 – and his international fame (Mr. Bean) surely added to the provenance of this McLaren F1.
In my earlier article I mentioned a rumoured price of £8 million ($12.4 million/€11 million). And coincidentally this is exactly the price that was paid a few days ago for this epic super car! Making this one of the highest prices ever paid for a car in the UK. Only being surpassed by classic Ferraris (a 250 GTO anybody?).
So if you were interested in acquiring this famous McLaren F1, you should look elsewhere. The buyer is from the UK, so this piece of British supercar heritage remains in its homeland. And hopefully he/she will have a great time driving it.
Chassis 61 will always be known as the ‘Rowan Atkinson McLaren F1’.
