In 1983 Senna became F3 champion and signed with privateer F1 team Toleman Motorsport, becoming Johnny Cecotto’s team-mate. The TG183B would be his companion in his first four F1 races. Senna made his F1-debut on March 25th 1984 in the Grand Premio do Brazil in Rio De Janeiro. He qualified 17th but due to a turbo failure he had to retire. In Kyalami a 13th qualifying time resulted in an impressive 6th place, earning him his first F1 championship point! In the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder, he qualified 19th and finished 7th. But due to a disqualification the 6th position brought in the second point. Senna’s final race in TG183B was the San Marino GP in Imola, where he didn’t qualify due to a fuel pressure problem. He would finish 9th overall in the 1984 Championship with Toleman.

The Toleman TG183B, designed by Rory Byrne and Pat Symonds, made his debut in the 1983 F1 Championship and was driven by Derek Warwick and Bruno Giacomelli. After four races in 1984 with Senna and Cecotto, the TG183B was replaced by the TG184. The TG183B featured a characteristic double rear wing configuration and radiators built into the front wing. Unfortunately this front wing-setup made the front unstable at high speeds, so it was replaced by a more traditional configuration. A five-speed manual gearbox controlled the 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This Hart engine (named ‘415T’) produced 600 hp.
